Anthropic’s Claude solves nine-loop amplitude challenge in theoretical physics

Share

Anthropic physicists Liam Fitzpatrick and Siddharth Mishra-Sharma used Claude to compute the six-particle scattering amplitude in planar N=4 super Yang-Mills theory at nine loops, setting a new record. The calculation was undertaken as a public challenge issued by former physicist Matt von Hippel on August 7, 2026. The previous record of eight loops was set in 2023 by Lance Dixon and Andy Liu. The total compute cost came to a few thousand dollars, and the results were verified by Lance Dixon himself. The Claude version used was Fale 5.1 on the Claude Science platform.
