Fraudsters used AI-generated voice cloning and fake WhatsApp messages to steal €95 million from Fideuram, the private banking arm of Italy’s largest lender Intesa Sanpaolo. The scam targeted former Fideuram chairman Paolo Molesini, who received a message seemingly sent by CEO Carlo Messina, followed by a phone call with an AI-cloned voice. Approximately €53 million to €59 million has been recovered through cooperation with Chinese banks and Portuguese authorities via Eurojust, but €36 million remains missing after conversion to cryptocurrencies. The incident was publicly disclosed on September 25, 2026, roughly seven months after the transfers occurred.
