Residents of Hazle Township in Pennsylvania are opposing Project Hazelnut, a 1,300-acre data center development by NorthPoint Development worth $165 million. The developer offered $10,000 to eligible households in exchange for agreeing to the construction of a 15-building campus, an offer largely rejected by residents. Official records revealed Amazon’s involvement in the project despite its initial attempts to keep the connection secret citing contractual issues. Forming the Alliance to Stop the Line, residents filed approximately 20 formal protests and won a victory in May 2025 when a judge rejected the project on zoning grounds. Governor Josh Shapiro has since reversed his support for fast-track permitting for data centers.
