Warren Buffett’s first tax return filed at age 14 in 1944 was only $7 on earnings of $592.50 from delivering newspapers in Washington D.C. Today, his company Berkshire Hathaway paid $26.8 billion in taxes in 2024, the highest amount ever paid by a company to the U.S. government. Despite a personal fortune of $142 billion, Buffett has long argued that the rich don’t pay enough in taxes, pointing out that he pays a lower effective tax rate than his own secretary. Before he took control in 1965, Berkshire Hathaway paid no income tax, which he called ‘an embarrassment.’
