A rumor spreading on social networks since late October 2025 claimed that overdraft authorizations would be banned in France starting November 2026, causing unfounded panic among millions of affected French citizens. In reality, ordinance n deg 2025-880 of September 3, 2025, which transposes a European directive from October 18, 2023 on consumer credit, does take effect on November 20, 2026 but does not ban overdrafts at all. It simply extends the obligation to verify creditworthiness to all overdrafts, including the smallest ones, whereas previously this verification only applied to overdrafts of 200 euros or more or lasting more than one month. Existing authorizations are not affected by this reform, and banks must give two months’ notice for indefinite overdrafts or thirty days for fixed-term overdrafts.
