IMF says AI will drive global growth as investments spread beyond the US

The IMF published on April 3, 2026 an analysis calling artificial intelligence a macro-critical transition capable of rewriting global growth forecasts. In its January 2026 World Economic Outlook update, the fund raised its global growth forecast to 3.3%, citing AI-related investment as a meaningful contributor. The fund identifies two channels of AI-driven growth: direct productivity enhancement for firms and workers using these tools, and capital accumulation through massive investments in AI infrastructure. Asian emerging markets are capturing indirect gains through supply chain demand, exports, and foreign direct investment in the energy and technology hardware sectors that AI depends on. The IMF highlights that AI’s benefits will be unevenly distributed across nations and income groups, and that adequate governance frameworks and financing mechanisms will be essential for sustainable gains.
