OpenAI’s Sam Altman admits the AI boom is running late, still waiting for its ‘iPhone moment’

Sam Altman, CEO of OpenAI, acknowledges that the artificial intelligence revolution is running behind schedule. He believes the industry has the necessary technology but lacks suitable products, describing this as a « product failure. » OpenAI’s financial results for the second quarter of 2026 illustrate this tension: revenue reached $6.7 billion, up 18%, but operating losses widened to $12.3 billion. By comparison, competitor Anthropic generated $11.6 billion in revenue during the same quarter and reported its first adjusted operating profit. Both companies are considering going public, with OpenAI postponing its plans to 2027.
