An investigation by Gamers Nexus, conducted in partnership with Level1Techs and three independent security researchers, reveals that LG televisions scan entire household Wi-Fi networks and capture audio through the microphone even when the screen is off or unplugged from the internet. The team spent over 500 hours and approximately 70,000 dollars on testing, notably discovering a hidden secondary microphone that bypasses the mute button. LG agreed in May to a settlement with Texas requiring informed consent before collecting viewing data through automatic content recognition. Additionally, approximately 42 percent of apps in the webOS store contain residential proxy code that redirects strangers’ internet traffic through the user’s connection, and unpatched remote code execution vulnerabilities remain unfixed to this day.
