US retail sales rebound more than expected, signaling consumer resilience

US retail sales rebounded 1.2% in August from July, the strongest monthly gain in five months, easily beating economist forecasts of 0.7% to 0.8%. The US Census Bureau reported total August retail and food services sales at $773.9 billion on a seasonally adjusted basis, up 6.0% year-over-year. Core retail sales, which exclude autos, gasoline, building materials, and food services, rose 1.4% for the month, far exceeding the expected 0.4%. Gasoline station sales led category gains at 3.1%, followed by online shopping which jumped 2.6%.
