‘The way work gets done is changing across every industry’: Kroger cites AI efficiency push as it cuts 3,000 corporate jobs

Retail giant Kroger plans to eliminate approximately 3,000 corporate roles over the next three years, representing roughly 37% of its 8,200 corporate employees. This restructuring is part of a broader AI adoption strategy aimed at modernizing operations and funding lower prices for consumers. CEO Greg Foran, former head of Walmart’s U.S. business, aims to strengthen the chain’s competitiveness against Walmart and Aldi. The cuts represent less than 1% of Kroger’s total workforce of 409,000 employees across more than 2,700 stores under banners including Ralphs, King Soopers, and Fred Meyer. Analyst Neil Saunders warns that savings would translate to only pennies per basket unless focused on products that matter most to shoppers.
