Texas has the largest planned data center pipeline in the United States, with more than 60 gigawatts of potential capacity when smaller facilities are included. Fermi America’s Matador campus in Carson County accounts for 17 gigawatts by itself and is the country’s largest individual data center project. Developers are drawn to the state’s available land, abundant natural gas and regulatory environment, which is widely regarded as favorable to large-scale developments. However, ERCOT’s interconnection queue totals about 474 gigawatts, with nearly 90% of requests coming from data centers, while permit reviews for projects totaling almost 50 gigawatts have been suspended. BNEF forecasts that only 1.2 gigawatts of ERCOT data center capacity will come online between mid-2026 and early 2027.
