Anthropic plans to generate electricity on site for its future data centers using natural gas generators, according to an initial public offering filing dated October 26, 2026. The strategy is intended to bypass intense competition for grid power, lengthy grid-connection delays, and clean-energy projects that cannot meet its needs in time. It nevertheless exposes the company to uncapped fuel and transportation costs, potential supply disruptions, and volatile natural gas prices. Anthropic has signed a $45 billion, six-year agreement with Nscale for access to about 460 MW of computing capacity at the Monarch campus in West Virginia, which targets nearly 2 GW of on-site generation. Another 470 MW power agreement with ERock was reportedly disclosed in August 2026, while its broader computing and infrastructure strategy is valued at between $500 billion and $800 billion.
