Stripe consortium reportedly drops pursuit of PayPal after board rejects $53B bid

The consortium formed by Stripe and private equity firm Advent International has withdrawn its joint bid to acquire PayPal after the payments giant’s board rejected the $60.50-per-share offer as insufficient. The offer, valued at over $53 billion and representing roughly a 28% premium over PayPal’s trading price, was backed by approximately $50 billion in bank financing coordinated by JPMorgan and Morgan Stanley. Block, formerly known as Square, participated in early discussions but exited before the formal offer materialized. PayPal’s stock surged approximately 17% when the acquisition attempt was announced in July, but negotiations ended in August without an improved bid. Stripe, which processed approximately $1.9 trillion in payment volume in 2025, remains the most likely consolidator in the payments space.
