OpenAI mulls selling compute capacity down the road, but not anytime soon

OpenAI CFO Sarah Friar stated in an August 20, 2025 interview that the company is not planning to sell compute capacity or offer infrastructure services to external customers for now. OpenAI is prioritizing the use of its resources for its own AI workloads, which continue to scale rapidly. The company has built a compute empire through partnerships with Microsoft, AWS, Oracle, AMD, and Nvidia, including the Stargate project targeting over 10 gigawatts of compute capacity and a 38 billion dollar partnership with AWS. Reports from early 2026 confirm that OpenAI remains in accumulation mode with no external sales efforts announced.
