South Korea Announces Delay in Crypto Taxation Policy

South Korea has postponed until 2029 the introduction of a tax on cryptocurrency capital gains, extending the tax-free period by two years. The measure, which has already been delayed four times, was initially scheduled to start in January 2022 with a 22% tax on gains exceeding 2.5 million won. The government plans to connect data from local exchanges with a US information-sharing system to improve oversight of trading conducted overseas. It also intends to allow investors to carry forward crypto investment losses for up to three years, simplify reporting requirements and establish a working group to refine taxation rules, with legislative amendments expected to reach the National Assembly in 2027.
