Solana activated its first slot time reduction on testnet on August 5, decreasing block production intervals from 400 milliseconds to 350 milliseconds. The change is governed by SIMD-0525, a proposal that outlines four sequential 50ms decrements aimed at achieving 200ms slots. Each reduction requires supermajority endorsement from approximately two-thirds of staked validators and includes a one-epoch buffer before taking effect. The Agave v4.2 client upgrade is mandatory, with mainnet rollout expected around August 17. The initiative is complemented by Alpenglow, a new consensus framework designed to optimize finality times.
