Nvidia has officially agreed to buy open-source artificial intelligence platform Hugging Face for $12.9 billion. This acquisition is the chipmaker’s second largest on record, after the $20 billion purchase of assets from Mellanox in December. It follows the purchase of Israeli chipmaker Mellanox for nearly $7 billion in 2019. Nvidia CEO Jensen Huang stated that Hugging Face will remain an open platform for the entire AI ecosystem. Nvidia, which has become the world’s most valuable company due to insatiable demand for its graphics processing units, is thus diversifying beyond hardware.
