According to a study by the Italian Datacenter Association published on October 8, 2026, commercial data centers in Italy are projected to attract 36.9 billion euros ($41.5 billion) in capital investment by 2036. Installed capacity, measured at 460 megawatts in 2025, could grow fivefold to reach 2.3 gigawatts by 2031. The country faces a major imbalance between grid connection requests, ranging from 60 to over 100 gigawatts, and the mere 1.9 gigawatts currently at an advanced development stage. The sector’s historical realization rate of only 68% between 2023 and 2025 suggests these projections should be viewed with caution. Milan and Lombardy remain the core of Italy’s data center market, but new projects are emerging in Piedmont, Puglia, and Sardinia.
