Illinois backs delay to crypto tax rule after months of industry pushback

Illinois officials and crypto industry groups jointly filed a motion on October 1 seeking to delay the Digital Asset Tax start date from January 1 to July 1, 2027. The 0.2% levy applies to the value of covered digital assets rather than investor profits, with brokers responsible for collection and remittance and a fallback customer obligation if the tax is not charged. The court had not confirmed the injunction as of October 4, while public comments on preliminary rules remain open through October 30. Revenue Director David Harris and Attorney General Kwame Raoul joined the request without conceding the constitutional merits of the ongoing legal challenge.
