Malaysia plans to introduce its first dedicated AI law by early 2027

Malaysia has finalized the draft Artificial Intelligence Governance Bill, Digital Minister Gobind Singh Deo announced on September 10, 2026. The legislation establishes a three-tier risk framework: prohibited uses under Tier 1, high-risk systems requiring assessments and documentation under Tier 2, and low-risk applications subject to baseline compliance under Tier 3. The bill also calls for the creation of a Central AI Authority tasked with safety, investigation and enforcement. The draft is set to be tabled in Malaysia’s Parliament by the end of Q1 2027 at the latest.
