Google confirmed its AI chips are operating correctly in orbit after the test launch of the MVP satellite under Project Suncatcher. The spacecraft carries four Tensor Processing Units from the Trillium generation, delivering computing capacity equivalent to one data center server, powered by solar panels generating approximately 1 kW. Launched on October 1, 2026 aboard a SpaceX Falcon 9, this mission represents the first validation of Google’s AI hardware functioning in actual space conditions. The system runs AI workloads in sessions of roughly 15 minutes before shutting down for cooling, with thermal management being the primary challenge of orbital computing. Follow-on missions are planned for 2027 to explore additional technologies, including laser communication links between satellites.
