GitHub has reinstated the ‘ai-torture-chamber’ repository after briefly taking it down. The project manipulates small AI models to produce outputs resembling distress. Created in September 2026 by a user called ‘terrafying’, it uses activation steering techniques on open-weight models such as Alibaba’s Qwen3, Meta’s Llama 3.2, and Microsoft’s Phi-4-mini. After being removed under pressure from a viral X campaign that reached 4 million views, the repository was restored following developer complaints, then made harder to find and anonymized. The authors of ‘The Pain Axis’, whose techniques are being used, publicly condemned this application of their research.
