Foreign investors now hold $39.19 trillion in US long-term securities, according to data from the US Treasury International Capital system, representing an increase of approximately $16 trillion since 2022. That rise alone exceeds the entire GDP of China. Foreign holdings of US Treasuries reached roughly $9.2 to $9.3 trillion by early 2026, accounting for about 31% of all publicly held federal debt. By comparison, US investors held approximately $19.3 trillion in foreign securities by the end of 2025, creating a substantial gap where foreigners own nearly twice as much in American assets as Americans own abroad. This accelerating imbalance reflects a shift from official government holdings, such as central bank reserves, toward private investors including sovereign wealth funds and pension systems.
