Europe is experiencing a record-breaking hot and dry summer with unprecedented heat waves and drought conditions. In Greece, over 1,000 people were evacuated around Athens as a major wildfire rages through the region, while two air operators (a Greek and a Dane) died in a midair collision between two helicopters. In France, the country’s largest recorded wildfire burned approximately 420 km² near Bordeaux, forcing the evacuation of 224,000 people, the largest civilian evacuation outside wartime. The UK experienced its driest July in nearly two centuries, with over half of England and all of Wales officially in drought. The European Union’s Copernicus climate service confirms Europe is the fastest-warming continent, heating at more than twice the global average.
