U.S. corporations announced 52,881 job cuts in August 2026, according to Challenger, Gray & Christmas, down 38% from August 2025 and the lowest August total since 2022. On a monthly basis, however, cuts jumped 58% from July’s 33,429. Restructuring became the leading cause of layoffs with 16,173 announcements, pushing artificial intelligence to fourth place with just 3,462 cuts after five consecutive months at the top. The most affected sectors were consumer products (10,057 cuts, driven by Procter & Gamble and Estee Lauder), food producers (7,982 cuts tied to Tyson Foods), and technology (6,103 cuts).
