Anthropic warns Iran used US AI models to target US naval ships

Anthropic published a 154-page threat intelligence report detailing how an Iran-linked actor used its Claude AI to compile intelligence on US Navy vessels in the Middle East, creating what the company describes as targeting handbooks. The operation involved automated surveillance pipelines combining data extracted from public military photographs, ship and aircraft transponder identifiers, commercial satellite imagery, and vulnerability assessments of VSAT satellite communication terminals and Cisco networking equipment. Anthropic identified and banned the responsible account while reporting the incident to US authorities. The report does not confirm whether the aggregated intelligence was actually used in any real-world operational context. State-linked actors from China, Russia, and Yemen’s Houthi movement were also identified engaging in comparable AI misuse activities.
