Artificial intelligence is now involved in 55% of reported cyber incidents in Africa, according to INTERPOL’s African Cyberthreat Assessment Report 2026, released on August 3. Financial losses have more than doubled, rising from $192 million in 2024 to $484 million. The main methods include AI-assisted scams, credential harvesting, and automated social engineering. Seventy-two percent of surveyed African countries report the existence of organized scam centers, primarily concentrated in Southern and West Africa. Operations Serengeti 2.0 and Contender 3.0 conducted in 2025 led to over 1,500 arrests and the recovery of $100 million, representing roughly 20% of total losses.
