Bitcoin and gold are the two major asset classes with the worst performance of 2026, an unprecedented situation in Charlie Bilello’s comparative data. Since the start of the year, gold has fallen 7.5% and Bitcoin 7.3%, with both assets now trailing stocks, bonds and even cash. This development challenges their traditional role as safe havens during periods of economic uncertainty. Bitcoin and gold nevertheless retain strong long-term performance, with Bitcoin delivering an annualized return of approximately 120.6% since 2011, compared with 6.3% for gold, after leading their peers in 2024 and 2025. The final rankings could still change, as more than two months remain before the end of 2026.
