According to a report by Chainalysis, agentic commerce, which describes the use of AI agents to carry out Internet transactions, is experiencing exponential growth fueled by cryptocurrency. On Coinbase-incubated Base blockchain, cumulative payments through the x402 protocol rose from approximately 1,500 in mid-2025 to more than 138 million by the third quarter of 2026. More than 87% of these payments were for less than 10 cents, making blockchains particularly suitable for microtransactions compared to high credit card fees. The median time between a wallet receiving its first deposit and making its first payment dropped from 73 days in late 2025 to just 18 minutes by the third quarter of 2026, indicating growing automated usage. The x402 protocol, backed by major companies including Visa, Mastercard, Stripe and Google, launched under the Linux Foundation in July 2025.
