OpenAI filed new allegations on October 14, 2026 against a former employee now working at Apple, accusing them of moving over 100 files related to an unreleased product to a personal account before sharing details of that device with Apple’s senior leadership. Apple sued OpenAI in July 2026 in the US District Court in San Jose, naming OpenAI, its hardware unit io Products, Tang Yew Tan, and former Apple engineer Chang Liu as defendants, accusing them of systematically soliciting confidential hardware information from former Apple engineers. Chang Liu is specifically accused of exploiting an authentication bug to download confidential files after leaving Apple in January 2026. OpenAI acquired io Products, founded by Apple’s former design chief Jony Ive, for approximately $6.5 billion in 2025. OpenAI’s first consumer device, an AI companion product, is expected to be unveiled in late 2026 or 2027.
