Crypto Hack Losses Jump 462% in September as Bitget Becomes the Year’s Biggest Theft

Crypto hack losses reached $766.49 million in September, setting a new monthly record for 2026. This figure represents a 462% increase compared to the $136.3 million lost in August. Two incidents account for most of the damage: Bitget lost approximately $387 million and Liquid Network approximately $320 million, most of which was returned by people claiming to be white hats. Together, these two hacks represent $707 million, or 92% of the monthly total. The Bitget breach, dating back to August 31, resulted from a zero-day flaw in a third-party security product, and investigators suspect involvement from North Korean hackers.
