French public debt reached a new record of 3,595.5 billion euros at the end of June 2026, equivalent to 119% of GDP, surpassing the historical peak of 117.8% recorded during Covid in March 2021. The debt increased by 59.6 billion euros in three months, the equivalent of approximately 655 million euros per day. The state contributed 53 billion euros to this rise, while Social Security added 8.4 billion euros. Interest payments on the debt are expected to reach 59.3 billion euros in 2026, an increase of 4.4 billion euros compared to 2025. Nearly 90% of the debt, totaling 3,229 billion euros, consists of securities traded on the markets.
