Tether partners with Shiga to launch self-custodial finance in Africa and GCC

Share

Tether has made a strategic investment in Shiga Digital, an Abu Dhabi-based fintech, to expand self-custodial digital asset products across Africa and the Gulf Cooperation Council region. The partnership leverages Tether’s open-source Wallet Development Kit to enable businesses and individuals to hold and transact in USDT without relying on centralized custodians. Shiga Digital has been operating since 2016 with its Enta wallet, a self-custodial solution using passkeys and biometric authentication instead of traditional seed phrases, supporting USDT, Bitcoin, and tokenized gold. The company has processed over $350 million in transaction volumes and holds a DIFC Innovation License while working with licensed financial transmitters across multiple African and Gulf countries. This infrastructure aims to address cross-border payment needs between Africa and the GCC region, where transactions can settle in minutes on-chain versus three to five business days through traditional correspondent banking networks.
