Tim Chadwick, Google Data Center Operations Area lead for Ohio and Indiana, said hundreds of thousands of skilled trade jobs remain unfilled across the U.S., including positions like master electrician, lead pipefitter, and project manager. According to the U.S. Department of Education, approximately 2.1 million skilled trades jobs could go unfilled by 2030. McKinsey estimates that $6.7 trillion in investments will be needed for data centers worldwide by 2030. A 2026 survey of construction firms revealed that 58% face increased competition for skilled workers and 49% experience rising wage pressure. In response to this shortage, companies including Ford, Google, Nvidia, and General Motors have partnered to form the Alliance for America’s Skilled Trades and the Building Futures Skilled Trades Coalition to revive vocational training programs.
