U.S. federal prosecutors are investigating whether Binance knowingly allowed transactions that violated American sanctions on Iran. The Manhattan U.S. attorney’s office and the Justice Department’s criminal division are involved in this inquiry. Binance previously pleaded guilty nearly three years ago for failing to comply with U.S. banking and sanctions laws, paying $4.3 billion and having two corporate monitors appointed. Co-founder Changpeng Zhao stepped down as CEO, served four months in prison, and was pardoned by President Donald Trump. Investigations by Fortune, the Wall Street Journal, and the New York Times revealed movements exceeding $1 billion to Iran-linked entities, while Binance disputes these figures, stating that at most $126.1 million reached Iran-linked wallets and $24.1 million reached IRGC-related wallets.
