A resurfaced Bitcoin forum post from September 7, 2010 reveals the dramatic shift in mining economics over the years. User TTBit calculated that producing a single block on their home computer would cost approximately $5.68 in electricity, with a reward of 50 BTC. Their machine, consuming 140 watts and producing 2,200 kilohashes per second, would have taken roughly 14 days to mine one block, consuming 47.3 kilowatt-hours. Bitcoin creator Satoshi Nakamoto himself participated in the discussion, estimating that a 24-core AMD system could reach around 66,000 kilohashes per second. At the time, the cryptocurrency had very little economic value and CPU mining was still the standard practice.
