The attacker on Blockstream’s Liquid federation wallet announced the return of 3,400 BTC, worth approximately $268 million, after negotiations conducted entirely within bitcoin transactions. The attacker kept 598.5 BTC, about $47.2 million, representing 15% of the 3,998.5 BTC withdrawn. The incident was caused by a bug in the Elements SideSwap software that allowed the creation of fictitious L-BTC. Blockstream confirmed that neither SideSwap’s key nor any of its systems were compromised. Bitcoin traded at $78,855, down 0.90% over 24 hours.
