Announced job cuts in the United States fell to 33,429 in July 2026, the lowest monthly total since July 2024, according to outplacement firm Challenger, Gray & Christmas, representing a 46% decline year-on-year and a 27% drop from June. Through the first seven months of the year, US employers announced 477,033 job cuts, a 41% decrease from the 806,383 recorded over the same period in 2025. Hiring plans simultaneously reached their highest level for a July since 2022, with 16,095 new plans announced, a 25% increase year-on-year. The technology sector remained the single largest source of layoffs with 149,023 cuts, accounting for roughly 31% of the national total, while public-sector cuts plunged by more than 90%.
