A group of US lawmakers has introduced a bill in the House of Representatives to tax major AI companies and fund job creation if the technology causes mass unemployment. The proposal, put forward by Representatives Sara Jacobs, Greg Casar, and Valerie Foushee, would impose a 2% tax on AI token value or 3% on AI service revenues, whichever is higher, with rates increasing as unemployment rises. Revenue would be directed toward job creation in housing construction, infrastructure, and elder and child care. Senators including Bernie Sanders have proposed more radical measures, including a one-time 50% tax on OpenAI, Anthropic, and xAI. Tech leaders including Bill Gates and Anthropic CEO Dario Amodei have also supported the idea of taxing AI.
