Ethereum’s plan to triple network speed could silently break millions of existing smart contracts

Ethereum aims to triple its network throughput via the Glamsterdam upgrade scheduled for Q4 2026. Proposals EIP-8037 and EIP-8038 would reprice gas by significantly increasing state creation costs, with creating a new account rising from 25,000 to 183,600 gas for example. Analysis of 929.7 million transactions reveals that 174 million are fixable with higher gas limits, while 2.7 million would be potentially broken under EIP-8037. The entire ecosystem, from wallets to RPC providers to indexers and node tooling, will need to incorporate the new rules before deployment.
