The Nevada Transportation Authority granted Tesla a 12-month permit to operate a network of 5,000 autonomous vehicles across Clark County, including Las Vegas. This represents a 500-fold expansion from the previous 10-vehicle limit under a provisional permit from July 2026. Uber and Waymo received comparable approvals on the same day, making Nevada a three-horse race in the commercial robotaxi market. Tesla’s approach relies on cameras and neural networks, unlike Waymo which uses lidar, potentially significantly reducing marginal costs for adding vehicles to the network. The 5,000 figure is a ceiling, not an immediate deployment target, as Tesla has indicated plans to scale up gradually.
