The Dutch Data Protection Authority (AP) fined Uber 825 million euros, approximately $966 million, on August 17, 2026 for violating GDPR rules around automated decision-making. This fine represents the second-largest penalty ever issued under the regulation, following Meta’s 1.2 billion euro fine in 2023. The authority found that Uber suspended and deactivated driver accounts through algorithms without providing adequate notice or a meaningful appeal process. Uber stated that 126 drivers in Europe were affected in 2021 and announced it will appeal, contesting the fine as disproportionate. With this new sanction, the total amount of fines imposed on Uber by the AP exceeds one billion euros.
