Former LAPD officer Eric Halem was sentenced to life in prison plus 15 years for orchestrating a fake police raid that netted $350,000 in BTC from a teenage crypto investor. Halem, who was still a reserve officer at the time, was convicted of kidnapping and robbery after infiltrating the victim’s apartment in Los Angeles’ Koreatown wearing police-identifying vests and carrying LAPD-issued handcuffs. Los Angeles County Superior Court stated the facts of the case constitute an affront to justice, even though the victim admitted his BTC came from fraudulent activity.
