Why keeping your private keys safe won’t always stop crypto theft

Liquid lost nearly 4,000 Bitcoin on Sept. 6 through a withdrawal approved by the network without stolen private keys: a software flaw allowed attackers to create L-BTC tokens without underlying Bitcoin deposits. Crypto insurance can cover losses without guaranteeing full customer reimbursement. Compensation calculated in dollars rather than Bitcoin can leave holders with fewer coins than their original stake if the price has risen. Customers need clear information about what they are promised before trusting a service provider with their assets.
