Ethereum co-founder Vitalik Buterin has revealed technical details of an experiment to create a confidential AI agent capable of hiding users’ identities from commercial AI providers. This system, called “paranoid mode,” was successfully tested in a demonstration that involved finding the five best vegan restaurants in Tallinn, using a multi-layered architecture combining local query rewriting, Tor isolation, and anonymous payments via zkAPI. Buterin acknowledged ongoing tradeoffs, including increased latency and Tor’s vulnerability to active threats, stating that real security will require specialized mixnets. The widespread deployment of this technology depends directly on an Ethereum update aimed at significantly reducing gas costs for zero-knowledge transactions.
