Vitalik Buterin has warned that rapid advances in AI-assisted mathematics could make ECDSA and other structured cryptographic systems less secure sooner than expected. Unlike Ethereum researcher Justin Drake’s call to prepare for bunker mode, Buterin advised users against rushing to migrate their funds to new wallets. He nonetheless recommended that the industry reduce exposure to quantum-vulnerable and potentially AI-vulnerable cryptography by favoring hash-based signatures such as WOTS and SPHINCS+. Yehuda Lindell, head of cryptography at Coinbase, rejected the warning, stating there is no evidence that the assumptions underlying elliptic-curve cryptography are close to failing.
