The US Department of Justice filed a civil forfeiture complaint on July 15 targeting $84.2 million in accounts tied to Capstone Ltd., a Montana-based payments firm that allegedly moved money for Tether without the required license. Of that amount, $79.11 million sat in a Wells Fargo Securities account, with smaller sums held at JPMorgan Chase and in two USDT wallets. Behind Capstone stands EQIBank, a Dominica-licensed digital bank that confirmed handling Tether’s wire transfers but claimed no knowledge of the conduct under investigation. Tether stated its exposure represents less than 0.034% of its total assets, which stood at $187.75 billion at the end of the second quarter.
