US Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent announced that the United States plans to seize approximately $1 billion in cryptocurrencies linked to Iran this week. This operation is part of US sanctions against Iran, whose military conflict began in February. Bessent stated that authorities know where these digital assets are located and plan to isolate them. The Office of Foreign Assets Control (OFAC) was already targeting cryptocurrency exchanges facilitating fund transfers to Iran’s Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps in August. In April, US authorities had seized $500 million in cryptocurrencies tied to Iran, and Tether had frozen $550 million worth of USDT in 2026 as part of these sanctions.
