Abu Dhabi’s sovereign wealth fund Mubadala Investment Co. is considering investing up to $6.3 billion (approximately 1 trillion yen) to build an AI data center in Japan’s Akita prefecture. The facility will have a capacity of 500 megawatts and targets an operational launch in the early 2030s. The investment would be made through MGX, the UAE’s dedicated AI investment vehicle launched in March 2024, which aims to manage over $100 billion in AI-related assets. This project is part of the UAE’s multi-decade strategy to diversify its economy away from hydrocarbons. If realized, it would represent one of the largest single data center investments by a sovereign fund in AI infrastructure.
