U.S. Trade Representative Jamieson Greer said Thursday that a trade deal with India was not imminent, despite a call between President Donald Trump and Prime Minister Narendra Modi that Greer described as « very constructive. » Washington and New Delhi are trying to overcome major sticking points: India’s purchases of Russian oil, which the U.S. considers as funding the Ukraine war, and India’s determination to protect its agricultural sector and preferential tariffs. India risks tariffs of up to 100 % if it continues buying Russian oil, while U.S. duties on Indian imports were reduced from 50 % to 18 % in February. U.S. Trade Representative Greer and Indian Commerce Minister Piyush Goyal held bilateral meetings in Milwaukee on the sidelines of the G20.
